Following the introduction of the Landfill Directive and UK law implementing the Directive in 2003, local authorities are legally obliged to reduce their dependency on landfill disposal. If they do not, they will be faced with rising landfill costs (including Landfill Tax) and substantial fines (£150 per tonne above the allowance) for non-compliance. The relevant LATS permits (in tonnes) for the partnering authorities for each EU Target Year are shown in the table below:
