A shame. A damn shame. Via the BBC:
Fire officials say there is unlikely to be a quick answer over what caused the fire which destroyed the pier at Weston-super-Mare.
The Grand Pier in the North Somerset town was engulfed by a blaze which began in the kitchens on Monday.
Avon Fire and Rescue said the skeleton of the 104-year old attraction was "incredibly unstable" and it was still unsafe to let investigators inside.
It was only last month that new owners Kerry and Michelle Michael got their alcohol license.
However, this is not the first time that the pier has burnt to the ground. In 1930, the structure, already 26 years old, was devestated by fire, and the two-thousand seat cinema that once stood at the end was destroyed. No doubt it will rise again, like a slightly camp phoenix from the ashes.
